Thanks in part to AMC’s Mad Men, and the impeccably styled Don Draper, Mod is back in a big way. Today’s mid-century modern engagement party from Harper Hadley Events is filled with glamorous details that will make you think you have traveled back in time. The Mad Modern shop in Cedar Rapids was a perfect location for this shoot. All the design elements work so effortlessly with the pieces in Dave’s shop. I love the bright palette, the hand pressed paper from Iron Leaf Press, and the stunning floral arrangements created by Shelly Sarver Designs. While this was a styled shoot, real-life newly engaged couple Chris and Wil served as models and added a sweet romanticism that took it to the next level. I know you are going to love it!
From the event designer… The inspiration for this Mid-Century Modern Engagement Party styled shoot started with a fun palette of orange and mustard yellow with some black and bronze accents. To steer clear of an autumn feeling, we infused mint green into the design. When designing everything, down to the last detail, I kept imagining what the Men of Madison Ave. would want at a party. How would they dress? What music would they enjoy? We had to have an awesome record player for tunes, dapper gents in their finery and of course, drinks!
Dave at Mad Modern was so gracious to let us have full access to his shop full of treasures. We were able to set up a dining and living space and use all of his amazing Mid-Century furniture. We could not have dreamed up anything more wonderful for the pieces. Everything worked together so well and created the most amazing party atmosphere. Can we please talk about the amazing gold headboard? The second I walked into Mad Modern, I was drawn to it and knew we had to use it for the shoot. It was the perfect casing for our bar and was such a wow factor!
Danielle, from Iron Leaf press, outdid herself on this shoot. A ton of the small details were made by her and and came out amazing. The hand pressed paper is so amazing to hold and the look of it is so luxurious! She made a wonderfully classic drink menu, cocktail napkins, coasters, the bar banner, cigar wraps and so much more. My favorite thing was the logo she designed for Chris and Wil, used throughout all of the paper elements. It was simple, clean and played so well into the design. I didn’t even see it until shoot day and I was blown away!
The Whiskey Bar was one of my favorite elements to put together. Many of the details in this shoot were gathered from the vendors’ personal collections. We included decanters and bar cart fare from most of us. Other details on the bar included cigars with custom designed wraps, rock candy for a little spruce up of your beverage, floral pops of color and a few other vintage details we uncovered in the Mad Modern shop. One of my favorite finds on the day of the shoot was the vintage ice crusher. It’s such a cool piece and added an extra bit of authenticity to the design. Another fun touch was that we used a local whiskey from Cedar Ridge Winery - locally made and delicious!
Shelly Sarver provided absolutely breathtaking floral arrangements, as always. She brought stems for the bud vases and provided a few other arrangements of various sizes that we used throughout the design. Shelly also created such fun, vibrant and whimsical boutonnieres for the guys. Some of the blooms used included orange Dahlias, pincushion Protea, Leucodendron, Craspedia, Yarrow, cranberry Vibernum berries, Poppies and assorted greens. Though I love the simplicity of the bud vases, I absolutely adored the large organic centerpiece she brought. Also, the orange and yellow vases she provided were perfection with the overall design.
This shoot was very organic and every single vendor on the team brought all of their creativity to the table. It was an honor to work with and learn from all of them. We were all on the same wavelength when designing, which made it that much more fun. This design was a departure for me, but the bright colors and period elements truly set my heart on fire.
In true Midwest fashion, we had a thunderstorm the day of the shoot, but the aftermath provided an amazing backdrop for outdoor photos. The storm clouds that lingered gave a completely unexpected, but awesome feeling to some of the more stoic images of real-life recently engaged Chris and Wil. Those are some of my favorites and they absolutely shine.
